This summer, eight out of ten American readers are planning on putting away their smartphones and burying themselves in books instead, a new survey by Barnes & Noble reveals.

In an independent study conducted on 1,500 reading adults, many are hoping to find some extra time to read this summer.

As many as 38% are planning on reading one to three books this summer, while 37% hopes to read as much as four to six books.

A vast majority (69%) will choose a print book, a quarter – an electronic device, while 7% will listen to an audiobook instead. Of those reading or listening on an electronic device, one-third will choose an e-reader, another third – a cellphone, and the rest will go with a tablet.

Almost half of the subjects will go for mystery books, followed by the history genre (37%), fantasy (34%) and science fiction (33%). Additionally, fifteen percent of summer readers are planning on joining a book club, with seven percent already in one.

Parents are hoping their youngsters will ditch smartphones and videogames and choose books instead

According to a survey conducted by Atomik Research earlier this year, nearly 90% of parents with children aged between 6 and 17 years old plan to ask their children not to spend their summer using electronic devices only.

Almost half of them (44%) is hoping their kids get off the computer for more than three hours a day; one-fifth would be happy to see their kids device-free for one to two hours.

When it comes to reading, roughly one-third (35%) of surveyed parents are expecting their children to read four to six books this summer, while a quarter wants them to read ten or more books. Another quarter hopes their little ones will read at least one to three.

Barnes & Noble has just revealed the most attractive deals the company is going to offer online and in stores during Black Friday and Cyber Monday 2018.

It’s still over a week until Turkey 5, but B&N is already luring customers to come to bookstores across the US or visit the online store to grab the upcoming deals.

The list includes the largest-ever offering of signed editions from acclaimed authors, up to 50% off the hottest books of 2018, and huge savings on gift books and collectible editions.

The complete list of Barnes & Noble Black Friday 2018 deals is available here. We’ll focus, however, on special offers the company has prepared for ebook lovers. The good news is that four Nook models will get price cuts, including the recently released Nook 10.1.

Let’s take a look at the upcoming Nook deals:

• $10 off Nook 10.1 tablet – the newest Nook is B&N’s largest device ever released. It sports the 10.1-inch IPS display (1920 × 1200 px, 224 ppi), offers 32 GB of internal memory, and runs on Android Oreo. The regular price of the tablet is already very attractive – it’s $129.99. You will be able to save extra $10, as the deal price will be set at $119.99,
• save $30 on Nook Glowlight 3 – launched in November 2017, the 3rd-generation Nook sports an enhanced front-light system that reduces the blue light when reading in the dark. The launch price of the e-reader is $119.99, but during Black Friday 2018, you will be able to get it for only $89.99, which means you save 25%,
• save 35% on Nook Tab E 9.6 – the earlier large-screen tablet developed in cooperation with Samsung – Nook Tab E 9.6 – gets the deepest price cut. Compared to the regular price of $199.99 the Black Friday price of $129.99 means you will save as much as 35%,
• get Nook Tab A 7 for $99.99 – the smallest of Samsung / Nook tablets also gets the price cut. Instead of $129.99, you will get it for $99.99. Update: the tablet is already offered at a reduced price.

If you want to grab the deals through B&N’s online store, you can do it already on Thursday, November 22, starting at 12 am Eastern Standard Time. All deals will be valid until Sunday, November 25, but some of them will be extended through Cyber Monday.

In-store deals will start on Friday, November 23, at 12 am EST, and run through Cyber Monday at 11:59 pm EST.

Barnes & Noble has just announced the new Nook Tablet 10.1. For $129.99, you get the 10.1-inch screen, 32 GB of internal memory, front and rear camera, and microSD card support.

The 2018 Nook is B&N’s largest tablet ever. The 10.1-inch IPS display is optimized for reading, but you can also conveniently play games or watch movies on it. The display has similar specs as Amazon Fire HD 10 released in 2017: screen resolution of 1920 × 1200 px, and pixel density of 224 ppi.

So far, the largest device in the offer was Samsung Galaxy Tab E Nook – the $249 tablet launched in October 2015 sporting the 9.6-inch screen with 1280 × 800 px resolution and 157 ppi pixel density. Nook E is still available in the B&N online store, with a price reduced to $149.99.

Just like other Nook tablets, the 2018 10.1-inch Nook is powered by an Android operating system – this time it’s Android Oreo. The system is modified to focus on the user’s content from the Nook Store.

What is important, unlike Fire tablets, Nook 10.1 (2018) gives access to the Google Play Store. It’s basically an affordable Android Oreo tablet that you can use to access and enjoy content from different digital platforms, not only the Nook, but also Google Play, Scribd, Kobo, or Kindle.

The new Barnes & Noble tablet comes in one storage option (32 GB), but you can expand the memory as it sports a microSD card slot. You can use the cards that are up to 256 GB. It’s an extra cost, as the card is not a part of the package.

Following the trend set by iPad Pro, and recently also Amazon Fire, the 2018 Nook comes with two original accessories. One is a dedicated keyboard case; the other one is a charging dock.

No more details about the accessories have been provided so far, except the fact that they connect not via Bluetooth or cable but special connectors. Barnes & Noble calls them “pogo-pin connectors.” They are the most convenient way to charge and use the device. The connection is being established immediately after you place the tablet in the case or dock.

The new Nook looks lightweight and smooth. The back is made from the material that has a soft touch finish to give you “holding comfort that lets go only when you do.”

The newest 10.1-inch Nook tablet is already available for pre-order in the B&N online store. Shipping starts on November 14, 2018. On this day, you will be able to test the new Nook in Barnes & Noble stores across the US.

You can always visit your local library and get the same book for free. And if the library also offers ebooks, you can download the title to your e-reader in a matter of minutes.

To access Nook Store online, visit Barnes & Noble online store, and look at the main navigation bar. On the left-hand side, just below the Barnes & Noble logo there are two links (see screenshot above):

• Nook Books – it’s where you can find start shopping for digital books, newspapers, and magazines,
• Nook – this section is devoted to Nook devices and apps.

There is a very handy feature that makes navigating the B&N site much easier. When you hover over the link in the main toolbar, a drop down menu appears that lists most important elements of the section. For instance, the shorcuts to Nook books look like this:

From the drop-down menu, you can not only explore Nook books by category but also easily find special section (featured under “Customer Favorites” and “Departments”), including:

• Nook Daily Find,
• Nook Book Deals,
• Top 100 Nook Book Bestsellers,

From here you can also directly go to your Nook library – the list of ebooks you’ve added to your B&N account.

Nook Store bestsellers

Each book publication offered in B&N’s online store is available in several formats: print (paperback and hardcover), ebook (called “Nook book”), and audiobook (“Nook audiobook”).

Therefore, it’s up to you how you want to find the bestselling books. You can start from bestseller lists featured in both Books and Nook books, and you’ll land on a book’s page where you can choose the preferred format.

Some of the book bestseller lists featured on Barnes & Noble website are common, but some are specific to print and Nook editions. Obviously, the latter refers to rankings based on sales.

B&N Top 100 Bestselling Nook Books

If you are looking for current Nook bestsellers, this list is the first destination to check out.

The ranking is being generated by sales and is updated as it happens, so sometimes the order of titles is changed after you refresh the page in your web browser.

You can use the tools available in the left sidebar, to filter the results by:

• subject – there are over 50 specific categories to choose from,
• price range – starting from Nook books under $5,
• format – book, magazine, newspaper, catalog,
• age – for children’s and teen books.

One feature is very helpful. When you refine your search by picking up a particular section, for instance, “Graphic Novels & Comics,” you will be presented with one hundred titles in this category, not only the ones that made it to general Top 100.

The New York Times Bestsellers

The list reflects the current ranking of the most influential list of bestsellers published every week by The New York Times.

The original NYT Bestsellers list consists of five sub-lists for both print and ebook editions, but in the Nook Store you’ll find the one that focused on ebooks – grouped in two directories:

• ebook fiction,
• ebook nonfiction.

Five top selling titles are highlighted on each list. You’ll see all 15 publications when you hit See All button.

Barnes & Noble Stores’ Bestsellers

As I’ve mentioned above, you don’t have to browse for bestsellers in the Nook Store. When you explore the section with print books, you can also find interesting bestsellers list.

One of them is the list that collects the books that enjoyed most sales in Barnes & Noble bookstores across the US.

The list is being updated every week, and you can find here fiction, non-fiction, and young adult books.

Once you find an interesting title, click on its cover or title, and you’ll go to the book detail page. In most cases, Nook edition is on the list of available formats.

Nook Store deals

Just like other ebookstores, Nook Store offers several deals, for both the ebooks and the devices.

On top of ongoing deals described in more detail below, such as Nook Daily Find, it’s good to visit the Nook Store for:

• Valentine’s Day deals – at the beginning of February,
• Mother’s Day deals – the beginning of May,
• back-to-school deals – August/September,
• Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals – the end of November,
• end-of-year deals – two last weeks of the year.

Nook Daily Find

It’s much more convenient to offer one-day promotions for ebooks than printed books. Amazon has Kindle Daily Deal, Kobo has Kobo Daily Deal, and Barnes & Noble offers Nook Daily Find.

Nook Daily Find is the most popular ebook deal on Barnes & Noble website. Every day one or two titles are heavily discounted – one is the main deal, and the other book is a deal from a selected category, such a romance, mystery, or young adult.

Usually, the price is cut by no less than 50%. Many times the savings are between 70 and 80%. The prices range from $0.99 to $3.99.

The purpose of running a daily ebook deal is to lure customers to the store as often as possible – and maybe they’ll buy not only the currently discounted title.

If you had to bookmark in your browser a single page from Barnes & Noble online store, it should be definitely the Nook Daily Find. It’s the hub that links to other current deals offered in the Nook Store. They are listed in the left-hand side scrollbar, in a section called “Special Values’ (see screenshot above).

There is also a chance to get Nook Daily Find in your email inbox. You’ll get notifications once a day. They will focus on the daily deal and nothing else.

Simply, use the sign-up form under the featured book on the landing page of Nook Daily Find.

101 Nook Books Under $2.99

Launched at the beginning of 2013, this deal section lists over 100 (and not exactly 101) Nook books that were discounted to cost no more than $2.99 each.

Barnes & Noble claims the books listed here are “gripping thrillers, steamy romances, former bestsellers.”

The prices are at the same level as Nook Daily Find so it’s good to check out the selection from time to time

The list is being changed every two weeks. Most attractive titles are usually available during high shopping seasons, such as Black Friday & Cyber Monday.

Nook Books Under $5

If you want to extend your search of low price books, check out the list of books that cost no more than $5.

This main list is curated by Barnes & Noble editors and includes usually around 500 titles. The highlighted titles are found under “This Month’s Under $5 Favorites.”

However, if you scroll down the page to reveal “Nook Books Under $5 by Subject,” and click on a specific category, you’ll see the list of all books in that category that cost under $5:

• fiction – over 430,000 books,
• mystery & crime – over 40,000 books,
• biography – over 30,000 books.

You can sort the results by price, to get the lowest-price publications first.

Nook Store special sections

You can find in the Nook Store many special lists that make finding interesting titles much more convenient. The best way to start a more complex search is from the directory of Nook Books by subject.

You’ll find here book categories split into three main sections:

When you scroll down the page, you’ll see the directory of special sections, called “Customer Favorites.” All Nook deals are listed here, but also other lists, such as:

Nook Store – devices and accessories

As I have mentioned earlier, the section devoted to Nook devices, applications, and accessories is different from the Nook Store. You can find it under Nook in the main top toolbar of the Barnes & Noble online store.

Nook devices

Barnes & Noble offers Nook e-readers, as well as tablets. The latter ones are the Nook-branded popular Samsung Galaxy Tab tablets.

On this page you can quickly compare all currently available Nook devices. You’ll find out key features, weight, and dimensions, as well as extra product specifications.

Nook apps

You can enjoy reading Nook books without the need to buy the Nook-branded device. it’s enough if you have a tablet or smartphone with one of these operating systems, and you’ll be able to download the Nook app from the relevant app store:

• Apple’s iOS – iPhone or iPad,
• Android – for instance Samsung Galaxy, or Google Nexus,
• Windows 8 and 10.

Barnes & Noble offers also an app (for both iOS and Android) on which you can listen to Nook audiobooks.

To complete the range of Nook tablets, Barnes & Noble has launched on October 7, 2015, the 9.6-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab E Nook.

The new Nook is the third tablet made in cooperation with Samsung, joining the 7-inch Galaxy Tab 4, and the 8-inch Galaxy Tab S2.

The new Nook is the largest device in B&N’s portfolio, but it’s not most expensive one. It’s cheaper than the 8-inch Nook S2 by $150. It equals the price of the smallest, 7-inch Galaxy Tab 4 Nook.

The launch price is $249.99, half the price of iPad Air 2 or Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 9.7 (both cost $500 each).

So, the price is attractive. What does the Samsung Galaxy Tab E offer for that price? Not much. The 1280 × 800 px screen in WXGA, with 157 ppi density, 16 GB of internal memory, two cameras (2 MP front and 5 MP rear), USB port and microSD slot.

And it’s pretty heavy. It weighs over half a kilo, 547 grams to be precise – over 100 grams more than its direct competitor, Amazon Fire HD 10.

Just like other Nook tablets co-branded with Samsung, the Nook E operates on Android, adjusted to center the user experience around the Nook Store. However, you will have easy access to Google Play, as well.

With the introduction of the third tablet, Nook users have now a clear choice:

• Galaxy Tab 4 Nook 7″ – if they need a tablet for basic needs – $149.99
• Galaxy Tab S2 Nook 8″ – if they want to have the top device with the stunning screen and best performance – $399.99
• Galaxy Tab E Nook 9.6″ – if the screen size matters most, but not at all costs – $249.99

At the time of the announcement on October 7, 2015, the new Nook was available both in Barnes & Noble stores and online.

If you buy Samsung Galaxy Tab E Nook, you can choose complimentary content from Barnes & Noble:

• three books from a selection of 20 great titles featuring favorites such as The Gravedigger’s Daughter by Joyce Carol Oates, or On A Night Like This by Barbara Freethy,
• three magazines from a selection of 25 popular publications, including Cosmopolitan, Esquire, and Food Network Magazine.

On top of that, through November 7, 2015, current Nook owners can visit any Barnes & Noble store to trade in select Nook devices. They will receive a $50 credit for the purchase of the Galaxy Tab E Nook 9.6. It will bring down the price of the new Nook to under $200.

Samsung Galaxy Tab E Nook – comparisons

Samsung Galaxy Tab E Nook is the largest tablet from Barnes & Noble, but its features are not impressive. On the other hand, what you can expect for half a price of the iPad Air 2?

With 1280 × 800 px display and Quad-Core 1.2 GHz processor it can be only compared to the newly introduced Amazon Fire HD 10.

The largest Nook tablet is also twice as cheap as the 9.7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab S2. Immediately, the question comes to mind why Barnes & Noble decided to follow the cheaper path instead of picking up the S2 tablet, just like they did for the 8-inch size.

$500 is the price users of Apple tablets would be willing to pay. For every other brand, the consumer’s choice path is from a more affordable to a more expensive model.

Going for a top-end model would not guarantee the sales. What Barnes & Noble is desperately looking for is a way to extend the user base. Because existing users are buying the content. And in the end, it’s the content where the money is, not the medium.

In that way, Barnes & Noble wants to compete with Amazon in drawing as many new customers as possible.

Anyone who bought a Nook device is not willing to change the platform, because of several issues related to content migration. In fact, it’s impossible to move the entire collection of movies, music and books from Amazon to Nook and vice versa.

Therefore, if you already own a Nook device, you are probably thinking of updating or upgrading the device. Here is a comparison of all Nook tablets made together with Samsung.

Following the two joint tablets, the 7 and 10.1-inch tablets based on Galaxy Tab 4, the two companies introduced the third model – Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 Nook.

For the price of $399.99, you get the thinnest, lightest, and fastest Nook tablet, which sports the 8-inch QXGA Super AMOLED display. Its resolution – 2048 x 1536 pixels – is the same as in the iPad Mini 3.

The display gives a deeper contrast, richer colors, and crispier details to maximize the reading experience and enjoy watching movies to the fullest.

The 2015 Nook tablet is based on the Galaxy Tab S2 – a recently launched Samsung’s new flagship tablet, and a replacement for Galaxy Tab S.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 Nook has an internal memory of 32 GB, with a possibility to add 128 GB via a microSD card.

It’s super fast. With an octa-core processor (1.9 GHz Quad + 1.3 GHz Quad), it’s made for multitasking. It lets quickly jump between applications, books, or movies without any lag.

Just like earlier Nook tablets offered in cooperation with Samsung, the Nook S2 is using Android operating system, but it’s layered with a Nook interface to improve content discovery and reading experience.

The 2015 Nook tablet was launched on September 3, both in all Barnes & Noble stores across the U.S. and in the online Nook Store.

The price, set at $399.99, is the same as for its sister device, sold by Samsung.

However, with Nook you’ll get an extra content for free. Specifically, you can get:

• three books from a selection of 20 great titles featuring favorites such as The Gravedigger’s Daughter by Joyce Carol Oates, or On A Night Like This by Barbara Freethy,
• three magazines from a selection of 25 popular publications, including Cosmopolitan, Esquire, and Food Network Magazine.

On top of that, when you buy Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 Nook, you will receive a $5 credit to help you explore the Nook Store. Barnes & Noble Members get an additional 10% off.

The new Nook is available in black, although Samsung also sells versions in white and gold.

Fewer and fewer users go into a specific ebook ecosystem based on the technical specifications of the device they decided to buy.

In the end, what matters is how you use the content. The hardware should only help you better experience using the content platform: buying and reading books, streaming movies, playing music, or using applications.

When you buy Nook, everything will attract you to the Nook Store. You can still read Nook books on the iPad, using a Nook app, but on the iPad everything will attract you iTunes Store.

In the table below you’ll see three devices compared, based on the size of the display:

• iPad Mini 3
• Amazon Fire HDX 8.9

When it comes to iPad Mini and Amazon Fire HDX, we show the prices and specs for the entry-level versions.

As you’ll see, all three models have comparable displays, with Nook having the lowest pixel density. Both iPad Mini and Fire HDX have 16 GB of internal memory. If you’d want to increase it, you’ll pay:

• $499 for the iPad Mini with 64 GB (there is no version with 32 GB),
• $429 for Amazon Fire HDX with 32 GB.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 Nook – official accessories

The times when the new Nook model was launched with a plenty of original cases and accessories are over.

However, unlike the latest GlowLight, Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 Nook comes with a few accessories.

On a launch day, 2-way Stand Cover was already available for sale. Currently, there are four color versions to choose from: Emerald, Blush, Midnight Blue, and – our favorite – Rectangles. We can expect the Red version to join soon, as it’s already featured in the header image of the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 Nook Accessories page.

There is no detailed info nor reviews for the 2-way Stand Cover. It is a solid and simple case that can be transformed into a horizontal or vertical stand.

The case is tailored for the new Nook S2, so it doesn’t have an unnecessary bulk. It keeps the device in place with plastic holders on both sides, so you’ll have easy access to all ports and slots.

In the Nook Store, you can also buy a Samsung-branded desktop dock. You can use it as a charger when you connect it to the computer. You can also use it as a viewing stand, either for viewing movies or displaying a recipe when cooking a meal.

Barnes and Noble offers now Galaxy Tab 4 Nook in two sizes: 7-inch and 10.1-inch. You’ll find technical specifications at the end of this overview post.

A good news for any loyal Nook user is that, unlike Nook GlowLight, there are plenty of accessories to choose from, not only sleeves, but also custom-cut covers and cases.

Both the 7″ and 10.1″ Nook were launched with original accessories – two designs for a smaller tablet, and one for the bigger.

But this is not the end. Most importantly, the new Nook-branded tablets are nothing more than regular Samsung Galaxy Tabs, with a software customized for Nook users, to enhance the reading experience and content management of the Nook Store.

In other words, any cover that fits the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4, will also fit Galaxy Tab 4 Nook.

This means you can shop for covers not only in the Barnes & Noble online store, but any other site. The situation that there was only one (and not very well accepted) official cover for Nook GlowLight won’t repeat.

If you’ll be ordering a cover or sleeve on Etsy, it’s always good to give the exact dimensions of the model to the seller. Just copy the dimensions from the table shown above and paste them into a “message to seller”.

Amazon – the giant online store offers the largest selection of all kinds of e-reader accessories. There are over 800,000 results for a search phrase “Nook case”.

eBay – on eBay you can find many cases that are exactly made to fit a specific Nook model, or are universal e-reader cases. It’s always a good destination to check out if you want to buy a case at an affordable price.

Etsy – a top destination for vintage and handmade items, art, and supplies. There are sleeves made from a natural cotton, or customized felt covers, or jackets made from a genuine leather. It’s the online store with the largest number of bright and fashionable sleeves for Nook GlowLight Plus.
